The plants made it

Ok. Whew. My babies are safe. Puttin' in a garden is a lot more work than it seems and I worked hard yesterday. I think it may have been a wild cat that got into my flower boxes on the porch (there are wayyy too many of those cats in the field out back.. remember the three black cats picture?) - but anyway, I just went and checked and all the little sprouts in the garden are still there. I only planted a few of everything because I don't want to get overwhelmed. My friend Carolyn at Harbor Hon suggested some lavender! I never thought to plant herbs for potpourri and I thought that was a cool idea! So far I have a few tomatoes, onions, beets, green peppers, zucchini, a few herbs... the usual. If it all works out, I'll can up some spaghetti sauce for the winter and have fresh salsa all summer.

::fingers crossed::

But for now.. I'm tryin' to think of somethin' fun to do on a "vacation" day at home when it's raining outside and I can't use any water inside till the septic company gets here Tuesday afternoon. Hmmmm. I think maybe it's just best if I go eat another (yes another and it's not yet 7am) ice cream sandwich and think about it... although that little voice in my head keeps telling me a little browse on Amazon.com couldn't really hurt... it's just browsing... hehehe.

Hey, there! I linked over from your last email quite handily. Sorry to hear about the water issues. It never fails. Vacation time is when this stuff hits. I'd say it is a good weekend for movies and homemade bread. That's the ticket! If nothing else, you have bread, right?

Hey Hon! Thanks for the shout-out! I was thinking this morning about the cats. They say great minds think alike. :) Hope they don't get any more plants. Mmmm! Tomato sauce and salsa sounds fantastic, and canning it for Winter sounds even better. I miss the chill night air already. It's already humid here and getting ready to rain. I could smell it on the air this evening. xxoo

With a rainy day I'd spend it cooking up something delicious, watching movies, and probably knitting!

As for the cats digging up your plant beds, there's a few things you can do to deter them from doing it again that won't actually harm them. Cats don't like citrus so lemon or orange peels will put them off - even spritzing lemon juice or using a lemon scented cleaner around the boxes will help. Also - you can make it a less desirable digging place if you use pinecones or heavy bark type mulch. Or you can be really sneaky and put a layer of hardware cloth around the plants and then another layer of dirt on top, so you can't see it but the cats can't really dig as they'd like. Hope that helps and good luck!

Nothing like a garden. I overdid it, still have plants waiting to be planted. Even so, love coming home to an herb garden or flowers everywhere!

Agree with the citrus to keep the cats away. You can spray the plants with lemon water but I prefer mulch. I always plant some catnip away from my pots to give the cats something to do instead of bother my things.
