This "him"... must surely be the culprit that's been digging up my flowers. I just saw him in the middle of the yard, but by time I ever so stealthily (is that a word?) got my camera he was almost in the barn. So there he is, but I don't know exactly what "he" is? A ground hog is what I think but it was so quick it's hard to tell. And the bigger question is.... what the heck do I do about him before he eats my darn garden??

There he is!
This "him"... must surely be the culprit that's been digging up my flowers. I just saw him in the middle of the yard, but by time I ever so stealthily (is that a word?) got my camera he was almost in the barn. So there he is, but I don't know exactly what "he" is? A ground hog is what I think but it was so quick it's hard to tell. And the bigger question is.... what the heck do I do about him before he eats my darn garden??

Hmmm, I looked it up and it's kinda hard to get rid of groundhogs (hedgehogs) in the garden once they've established themselves. One landscaping place talks about trapping them and relocating them, but I don't know if you have the time for that. The website also talked about getting whirlygigs because the hogs don't like fast moving things. Hope you get rid of him soon. xxoo
Oh yeah - that looks like a groundhog to me! Considering where you live I wouldn't go the trap & relocate route - other groundhogs will just move in to fill the space. I'm guessing you don't care so much about burrows and such in other areas of your property - you just want him not to kill the garden beds you planted! I'd try either sprinkling cayenne pepper around the beds and in between the plantings. Or put ammonia on some old rags and place them around instead. Hope that helps!
Yup. I'm going with groundhog. Do you have an Office Of Animal Control in your town? They should be able to trap him for you and move him to a happier hunting ground. He's so cute, but probably not the neighbor you want to keep around.
I have a family of those living under my barn. Something was eating my plants, which could have been rabbits, squirrels or birds; so I decided to reinforce my fence with chicken wire when a little guy about the same size came trapsing up to me all nonchalantly. Scared the bejesus out of me. Luckily, even though he's closer to my garden, he's only eaten the neighbor's (knock on wood). And I don't know what to do about him or his family either. But I think it was rabbits eating my garden. Now I think I have slugs. I didn't have any of these problems last year.
